Bristol Who’s Who Recognizes Maria Fernandez de la Vega
Maria Fernandez de la Vega has been active in the environmental sector since 1989, when she opened the first recycling center in her state, Queretaro. It is still functioning this day, and has drawn international recognition. Her association, Raices y Semillas, is a nonprofit organization that demonstrates in practical ways the efficiency and importance of environmental awareness. It was founded by Maria and a group of collaborators in 2000, and operates out of a center for environmental education, TERRARIO. It also addresses issues such as healthy food production, composting, water conservation, plant production and a host of others. People of any age are invited to learn.
Maria has also helped found several environmental groups. Among these is the Ambientalistas del Estado de Queretaro, A.C., which has since protected national parks, established 13 recycling centers, and brought the Municipality’s waste management and disposal systems into compliance with international requirements. She is also a founder of FIQMA, a Municipal Trust for Environmental Protection.
Maria’s work has had a tremendous impact on the environmental sustainability in Queretaro and beyond, and she has no intention to slow down. She was recently working on a new facility with walls made from glass bottles, and a water system purified by plants, which will in turn feed more plant life. She plans to continue the environmental education of the world.
Her current project is the Ecological Bathroom. “The most precious and scarce resource in most of the world is water and one of the great environmental problems is contamination by garbage. With this project we are showing how to partially solve these 2 problems.” The ecological bathroom will be built with blue glass bottles which are not recycled in Queretaro, preventing all this glass from going into the landfill. Gray and black water will be treated with plants and the excess water will be used to produce flowers. With the use of a solar water heater and rain, water will be collected from the roof, to be used for the toilet. This project, as most ecological projects do, will help people to save money and make the world a more beautiful place to live.
Education is continuous; to date Maria has been to dozens of seminars, conferences, courses, and lectures. She is also a frequent guest speaker and lecturer at many universities in Mexico. For her incredible contribution to the world and vast knowledge of environmental issues, Maria has been recognized with an Award from PROFECO.
