Bristol Who’s Who Recognizes Dr. Baltasar Mena

Baltasar Mena is currently a Distinguished Professor of Engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Dr. Mena specializes in Mechanical Engineering with a specialty in Rheology, teaching both undergrad and graduate students. He has been laureated with Mexico’s National Prize for Arts and Sciences, the UNAM technology award and the UNESCO Science Prize for an hexagonal solar silo used in Mexico, India and Southeast Asia, a patent that he has released free to the public. According to UNESCO, his silo design has saved millions of dollars yearly by preventing post-harvest loses. He has chaired both the International Committee on Rheology and the Mexican Society of Rheology.

Baltasar graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM, 1964),specialized in Fluid Mechanics at the University of Toulouse (France, 1967) and earned both a master’s degree and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Brown University where he also received the Brown Engineering Alumni Medal in 2000 as well as the Distinguished Graduate School Alumnus Award and was chosen among the 100 most distinguished Brown students of the XXth century. He has developed several patents, including an oscillatory die for polymer extrusion used by the Henequen Industry in the Yucatan Peninsula. In addition to his pro-bono seminars, Professor Mena has contributed to two textbooks and over 100 publications on Rheology.

Aside from his academic activities, Mena is also a veteran rock musician, having toured since 1959 with Los Sonámbulos, Los Sinners and Tequilas. Since 1976 he has been the lead singer and guitarist of Naftalina, a band with seven albums and over a hundred live performances. He currently resides in Mérida, Yucatan and may be often found touring the Caribbean in his sailboat.
