Bristol Who’s Who Recognizes Douglas Perret Starr
Professor Emeritus Douglas Perret Starr of Sioux Falls, SD, has amassed many years of professional experience as a reporter and a copyeditor, a speech ghostwriter, public relations professional and journalism professor. Douglas has written and published four books, the most recent being Working the Story (January 2014) with co-author Deborah Dunsford. He specializes in copyediting for news, for public relations, for books, for scholarly journals, and for master’s theses and doctoral dissertations.
Douglas started his working life in the military, serving during World War II in the South Pacific, 1943–1946 and the Korean War, 1950–1951. He was then in the Navy Reserve and the Coast Guard Reserve, 1965–1985, before retiring after 33 years. Dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, in 1972, Douglas earned both a PhD and a Master of Arts in Communication from Florida State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Louisiana State University. He worked as an Associated Press newsman, 1952–1963 and as a public relations speech ghostwriter, 1963–1968. During his years in higher education, Douglas held several positions in well-known institutions. Prior to his retirement from Texas A&M University in 2010, where he had been for 24 years, he taught full-time at the University of North Texas for 12 years, 1974–1986. He was also an Adjunct Professor at Mississippi College in Clinton, 2011-2013, teaching courses in Journalism and in Public Relations. He is an alumni member of Florida State University and Louisiana State University and has been awarded teacher of the Year at University of North Texas and twice at Texas A&M University.
