Bristol Who’s Who Recognizes Dr. James K. Makubuya
Dr. James K. Makubuya is an Associate Professor of Music at Wabash College, a top independent liberal arts college in the American Midwest. With nearly 20 years of experience teaching at the university level, Dr. Makubuya is a celebrated Ethnomusicologist who specializes in traditional African instruments. His primary instrument is the endongo, an 8-string bowl lyre of the Baganda; but this consummate musician also plays tube fiddles, bow harps, thumb pianos, log xylophones, pan pipes, flutes, drums and other features of World music. His research centers on East African organology, looking at the context of music in social and traditional cultural life. As a professor, Dr. Makubuya teaches a full course load, including World Music (Ethnomusicology), Instruments and Culture, Introduction to Music, Musicianship, East African Folk Instruments and Wamidan World Music Performance Ensemble.
Originally from Uganda, Dr. Makubuya earned his bachelor’s degree from Makerere University. He then relocated to the United States, where he earned a Master of Music in Western Music at Catholic University and ultimately completed his PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of California Los Angeles. Before joining the faculty at Wabash College, Dr. Makubuya served as an Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for 4 years. He has trained with several masters of folk music from both East and West Africa, and he has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Museum of Making Music, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Canadian Museum of Civilization, among others. He is also featured as an instrumentalist on several CD releases, including The Uganda Tropical Beat, Taata Wange, Watik Watik: Music from Uganda, and Wu Man and Friends.
Prolific in his research as well as in performance, Dr. Makubuya’s organology research has been published in the Galpin Society Journal, Journal of African Music, Society for Ethnomusicology Journal and the International Harp Journal. Today an American citizen, he continues to reside in Indianapolis, Indiana. Possessing a knack for language as well as music, the professor is fluent in Luganda, Lusoga, Gishu, Alur, English and Latin.
