Maja Menard is a Partner at Ulčar & Partners, a leading Slovenian law firm. With over 10 years of experience and practice, Maja has risen quickly through the legal ranks to become one of the more distinguished and accomplished lawyers in her field.

Maja acquired her law degree cum laude in 2000 at the University of Ljubljana, followed by a Master’s degree in EU and international law of economic relations in 2001 and a PhD in international law in 2005 at the University of Paris X – Nanterre. She is a member of the Paris (since 2006) and Slovenian (since 2010) Bars.
 
Before joining Ulčar & Partners in 2010, Maja worked for five years as an Associate in the Paris office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, LLP, where she developed significant experience advising international clients, particularly in dispute settlement matters. She credits her success in law as stemming from an early love of both the legal system and the business world; through years of challenging experiences, she was able to marry her two primary interests into a rewarding and successful career.
 
Maja is the author of domestic and international publications in international law and arbitration and occasionally lectures on topics in her field of expertise. She is listed as arbitrator with the Ljubljana Arbitration Centre at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia and has acted as arbitrator in commercial arbitration proceedings. She is also a member of the non-governmental organization Regional Legal Network, active inter alia in the fields of arbitration, competition, corporate, international and human rights law.
 
Maja has advised domestic and foreign clients in several M&A transactions, including, recently, the Republic of Slovenia in the sale of Nova Kreditna banka Maribor. She also has extensive experience in competition law and in particular State aid law, including most notably having represented the European Commission in proceedings before the Court of Justice of the EU concerning the annulment of a State aid decision. Maja regularly represents domestic and foreign clients in domestic and international dispute settlement proceedings, inter alia before the European Court of Human Rights, the Court of Justice of the EU and in international arbitration.
 
Maja resides in Kamnik, Slovenia, and speaks Slovenian, English, French, German, Italian and Croatian (with a status of certified translator for French and Croatian language).
