Craig Robertson is Head of HR at Crombie Lockwood. One of New Zealand’s leading insurance broking companies, Crombie Lockwood have been in business since 1978. They provide a complete solution to all your personal and business insurance needs covering: fire and general insurance, life insurance and income protection, business risk management, and premium funding. A seasoned expert with an impressive level of experience, Craig has been instrumental for the company in this role. Specifically he has full accountability for all HR functions for the company, having created the HR function whilst they were a privately held company through to sale to Wesfarmers Ltd in 2006. He then built the HR capability as they managed significant acquisitions for Crombie Lockwood to become the largest Insurance Broker in New Zealand. During Wesfarmers Ltd ownership, he was also responsible for the NZ Risk and Compliance function in conjunction with the CFO till 2011 as well as NZ Health and Safety and Sustainability till the present. The sale to Arthur J Gallagher,currently the fourth largest global insurance broker, was completed in June 2014.
With an Executive MBA from MT Eliza Executive Education (now part of Melbourne University) and over 25 years of experience in the industry, Craig has become a leader in the field of HR having created the HR functional capability in diverse situations from company start-up mode through cultural transformation to leading HR in successful businesses. He has developed, implemented,led and managed all HR functions; recruitment; induction; learning and development; performance management; remuneration; safety and wellbeing; talent management and leadership development.Throughout his career he has had significant experience in the HR management of acquisitions and integration, change management, culture and internal communications. Prior to joining Crombie Lockwood he created the HR function at Meridian Energyto suit it’s unusual start–up characteristicswhen it was established as a state owned enterprise. Meridian is New Zealand’s largest electricity generator and also retailing nation-wideand Craig’s work was recognised with an innovation award from the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand. Aside from his MBA, Craig has completed the Senior Managers Programme at Cranfield University; the Advanced Management Programme at Mt Eliza Executive Education; and the Company Directors Course with the Institute of Directors in NZ. Craig also holds a Diploma in Industrial Relations from Victoria University of Wellington; a certificate in Company Directionfrom Victoria University of Wellington Graduate School and Institute of Directors in NZand a diploma in Corporate Management from Victoria University of Wellington and NZ Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. He is a past recipient of the CheveningAotearoa Fellowship and is currently affiliated with the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand, the Institute of Directors in NZ and Chartered Secretaries New Zealand.
Outside of Craig’s busy professional life he finds time to relax with his family where he lives near the beach in St Heliers in Auckland, New Zealand. Craig attributes his success to being business and client focused first and then using his HR expertise to deliver pragmatic solutions for the business.
