Dr. Flavio Arturo Sánchez-Garfias is Director of the National Polytechnic Institute School of Computing (ESCOM-IPN), one of the biggest and most prestigious schools of computer engineering in Mexico. His extensive career in education and computer science spans over 12 years, and he has been with IPN for over a decade. Specializing in research management as well as research in image analysis and pattern recognition, Flavio excels at organizing academic components and is passionate about his job.
 
He earned his PhD in Computer Science from IPN 2009, and also holds a BSc and MS in Computer Science. His research areas include image analysis, pattern recognition, mathematical morphology and associative memories. Recently he published “Parallel pattern recognition library” for GPU’s More than Research, Volume 3, Proceedings of the 3rd International Supercomputing Conference in México, ISUM 2012.
 
Flavio enjoys helping impoverished children have the ability to attend school and mentors them so they can have opportunities that would otherwise not be available to them. He looks forward to continuing his work in education and computer science. He currently resides in Mexico City, Mexico, and speaks both English and Spanish.
