Bristol Who’s Who Recognizes Dr. John Watt
Dr John Watt is a seasoned expert in the History of China’s Public Health. A true luminary in his field, Dr. Watt is a researcher, writer and current Vice President of the American Bureau for Medical Advancement in China Foundation (ABMAC).
His latest book deals with the advancement of medicine and public health in China. EntitledSaving Lives in Wartime China: How Medical Reformers Built Modern Healthcare Systems Amid War and Epidemics, 1928-1945, it was published by E. J. Brill in 2014. The book shows how biomedical physicians and public health practitioners were major contributors to the improvement of public health during a period of widespread disease and warfare in China and thus to the rise of a modern China. It deals with contributions by both Nationalist and Communist leaders. The English language version is available at www.brill.com/products/book/saving-lives-wartime-china.” Fudan University Press will publish a Chinese version in jiantiziin August 2015. The fantizi version is being negotiated. Dr. Watt welcomes opportunities for exposure to university and college librarians, medical and public health school libraries, international development agencies, and foundations interested in public health.
A lifetime student of Chinese history, Dr. Watt holds a PhD from Columbia University, an MA from Harvard University and a BA from Oxford University. His academic knowledge complements his extensive experience. With an incredible start, Dr. Watt began his working life in combat service in Malaysia. Directly after this, he completed his education and from there he has had multiple senior roles including but not limited to: Assistant Professor at MIT, Dean of Windham College, Executive Director of ABMAC, Executive Secretary of CIRSPRC, and Director of China Studies for Primary Source.
He has published several major works. Titles include The District Magistrate in Late Imperial China; Public Medicine in Wartime China: Biomedicine, State Medicine and the Rise of China’s National Medical Colleges, 1931-1945 (2012); Health Care and National Development in Taiwan, 1950-2000 (2008); and Breaking Into Public Service: The Development of Nursing in Modern China (2004). He has made several presentations to physicians and scholars in Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu, also to academic and professional audiences in the US, and to educators and school committees in various school systems in New England as well as to other audiences interested in China.
On a personal note, Dr Watt is enthusiastic about China; his family and friends; playing chamber music, and painting watercolors with his wife where they live in Cambridge Massachusetts. His best advice is to balance family and work life and contribute all you can to both.
