Bristol Who’s Who Recognizes John Sloan

Dr. John J. Sloan III is the Director of the Center for Information Assurance and Joint Forensics Research, professor of criminal justice, and Chair of the Department of Justice Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).His research portfolio includes over $2M in funding from various sources including NSF, the Bureau of Justice Assistance, and the COPS office, 120 refereed articles, chapters, encyclopedia entries, conference papers, and research reports, and 5 books with top-tiered publishers including Oxford and Cambridge, the most notable being The Dark Side of the Ivory Tower a book about campus crime that was published in 2010.
Dedicated to the pursuit of higher knowledge, John holds a PhD in Sociology from Purdue University, and an MS and BS in Criminal Justice from Eastern Michigan University. He has twenty five years of experience at UAB as a faculty member in the Interdisciplinary Social Science department, department chair, interim chair, and director of two different graduate programs. He also co-founded and serves as the current Director of the Center for Information Assurance and Joint Forensics Research. Honors and awards include recipient of the UAB President’s Award for Classroom Instruction; finalist for the UAB National Alumni Society Lifetime Teaching Award, and recipient of a Certificate of Appreciation from the US Department of Labor.

When John isn’t busy with his academic pursuits, he volunteers at the elementary school where his wife is the principal. John thanks his mentors for his success and hopes to retire in the coming years. He currently resides in Hoover, Alabama, USA.
