Bristol Who’s Who Recognizes Joost Jan Bakker

Nestled in the historic heart of Middelburg (Netherlands) since 1996, the Galerie De Vier Gemeten shines a spotlight on to Zeeland, Dutch and Flemish fine art. Featuring oil paintings, aquarelles, gouaches and graphic art of artists from the Domburg Group, Veerist & Veerish Joffers of Veere, Westkapelle, Zoutelande and the Scheldt Luminists of Vlissingen. The gallery is owned and run by retired River Scheldt pilot and art collector Joost Jan Bakker.
 
As a part-time curator of the Veerish museum the Schotse Huizen (Scottish Houses) he is a self-taught expert of the ‘Veere Artists’ Colony’ (1892-1992).
In the gallery you may also find a small collection of ethnographic-art, mostly from the African continent, which compliments the colorful paintings.
 
The Galerie De Vier Gemeten is conveniently located in the province of Zeeland in the SW-region of the Netherlands, and is open Thursdays through Saturdays from noon to 6:00 PM, and by appointment.
 
In addition to sales, purchasing, brokerage and appraisals, he incorporates historical research into his daily work. Bakker has published several well regarded books on Zeeland art including, Heel de wereld trekt naar Veere 2003 (The Whole World Goes to Veere) the history of the Veere Artists’ Colony and Een tere stilte en een sterk geluid 2009 (A Splendid Silence and a Strong Voice) a study about the female artists who lived in Domburg and Veere.
