Bristol Who’s Who Recognizes Paul Mugge


Paul Mugge

 
Over his career, Paul Mugge held various executive management positions at the IBM Company and is currently Executive Director of the Center for Innovation Management Studies (CIMS) at North Carolina State University.
 
At IBM, Paul was part of a team that developed the industry’s first capability to simulate, test and manufacture VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) circuit, and also served on the design team that pioneered IBM’s first self-diagnosing, self-healing computing system. Additionally, he led the IBM task force that conceived the beloved IBM ThinkPad. Mr. Mugge received the IBM Innovation Achievement Award for the overall design and program management of the company’s first rack-mounted, “supermini-mainframe,” the IBM 9370 for which he was awarded the IBM Corporate Innovation Award. Paul also led the team that developed the venerable IBM ThinkPad computer, a game changer in technology. The height of Paul’s career, however, came in the mid-90 when he was part of the team that helped turnaround the IBM Company. For leading the reengineering of its hardware and software businesses Paul received the IBM Chairman’s Award.
 
Now, Paul is charged with leading CIMS, a global, virtual research center – dedicated to advancing the science and art of innovation –  into a new era of change. CIMS believes that the ability of organizations to create lasting value is vital to the continued economic prominence of our nation. A recipient of the Maurice Holland Award from the Industrial Research Institute, Paul has authored numerous papers and articles. He is most proud of authoring the CIMS Innovation Management[PM1] [PM2]  Maturity Assessment, a tool that has helped over a 100 organizations gauge – and improve -their capacity to innovate.
 
Recently Paul, along with co-author Stephen Markham PhD, published a new book titled, Traversing the Valley of Death: A practical guide for corporate innovation leaders. Paul holds a B.S. in Mathematics from Arkansas State University and is very grateful for the great people and mentors he had at Arkansas State University. Paul was president of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, a Distinguished Military Graduate, and in 1967 was selected to the “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities”. Paul is on the Board of Directors for the Bald Head Island Conservancy.  Paul is a proud father, grandfather and husband of Carmen.
