Biography :As a Senior Director for the Who’s Who I have the privilege to interview top Executives, Professionals and those that have changed the face of industry. These are the select few that have made an impact as well as moved the needle building companies where the answer is always we will find a way to bridge the walls and achieve what we are building.
So when I had the honor to interview Dr. Ian Magrath, I knew this was the Doctor of Doctors who mission in life was to treat the children of the world afflicted with Cancer regardless of who they are. As a former CEO, I enjoy talking to smart people who have vision, who have made a difference and as well live their dreams. These are the movers of the business world that make realities in their mission statements and create lasting change.
In Dr. Magrath’s own words, “Since retiring from the US Government in March 2012, I have continued as the President of the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research at no cost to the organization – i.e., I receive no salary, no funding for consultancies and sometimes even pay personally for trips to meetings relevant to the organization”.
The International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR) is an international not-for-profit, non-governmental organization established to address a neglected global health problem – the ever increasing burden of cancer in developing countries.
INCTR’s headquarters are located in Brussels, Belgium. It has branches located throughout the world.
The mission: To build capacity for cancer treatment and research in countries with limited resources through long term collaborative projects coupled to training and educational programs.
To promote international collaboration directed towards cancer control between technologically advanced countries and countries with limited resources. This will be accomplished through the development of networks and partnerships with corporate, professional, academic, governmental and non-governmental organizations which will bring together their special expertise to bear upon all aspects of cancer research and cancer control. To take advantage of unique opportunities for cancer research in developing countries.
The Resource development, administration and programs are supervised by an Executive Committee. The Executive Committee is responsible to INCTR’s Governing Council. Programs and projects are developed with the participation and input and advice of collaborating institutions involved with cancer research, treatment, including palliative care and education in countries with limited resources. Where necessary, INCTR utilizes the expertise of independent scientific advisors in program and project development.
INCTR partners with other organizations and institutions that have overlapping interests and activities. Partnerships may entail the joint conduct of projects or partner organizations may provide or contribute to an element or elements of a specific INCTR project or program.
INCTR has strong links with the World Health Organization (WHO) and was approved as a non-governmental organization in official relations with WHO in 2010. It continues to extend its professional network with other governmental agencies, including the Program for Action for Cancer Therapy (PACT) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Agency for Research on Cancer, with non-governmental organizations, with departments of universities, and with the corporate world.
INCTR functions through a series of INCTR-wide programs that involve collaboration with INCTR Branches and Offices and with institutions in low and middle income countries. Programs may include multiple projects or multiple countries. Each Program is run by a director and in some cases, a “co-” or associate director. Programs may be run by a small group of experts who function as a Steering Committee and advise the Director. Most Program members are distinguished professionals who generally work without remuneration, although travel expenses are usually paid for. INCTR emphasizes long-term collaboration in the context of projects undertaken within a programmatic area.
Without question this is a fantastic organization and the members of this fine registry should read the links attached here for additional information on Dr. Magrath as well as how to reach him. I will applaud those companies in this registry on a global basis to join forces with Dr. Magrath and fund this foundation that has incredible merit and has become the forefront in the treatment and prevention of this devastating disease.
